After leaving University and starting my first job in a different town, I looked for a church. The first one I found was what might be termed a liberal Methodist and it turned out to be quite different from the expression of Christianity I had been used to at Uni.
Although they were very friendly, they had much less fervour for the faith and also much less certainty about things like whether we could be sure we were going to Heaven. Interestingly there was a girl there who turned to have had a similar experience of the faith as I had and she described the church as “on a different wavelength” and, indeed, some of the members of the church agreed with that.
So I decided to try a different church which known for being Evangelical. It was also much larger and had a number of small groups and youth and young adult activities and that is where I made my next spiritual home.
However, this church was not sympathetic to the Charismatic renewal although they tolerated the members who were involved in it but it caused tensions. At one young adults’ group I met a guy called Martin who, by the way he spoke, gave me the strong impression that he had been baptised in the Holy Spirit. So I asked him and my intuition had been right. He introduced me to a group of people in that church, all of whom had experienced this and who met regularly to worship and receive teaching in the Charismatic style. Including some people who I had previously met but knew little of their Christian experience.
