Union

The Goal of Sanctification

  • The goal is not moral perfection for its own sake, but union with God — to love as God loves and to share in His holiness.
  • Eastern Christians speak of this as theosis, sharing in the divine life; Western Christians often speak of glorification or growth in holiness.
  • In every tradition, sanctification points beyond self-improvement to the healing of the human person and the renewal of creation.
  • As Christians grow in grace, they become signs of the Kingdom still coming into fullness — witnesses to the power of divine love at work in the world.

“We all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.” — 2 Corinthians 3:18
